DNC Council On the Environment and Climate Crisis Praises Biden Pick Of Bryan Newland For Interior Assistant Secretary; Urges Quick Senate Passage
Statement of Michelle Deatrick, National Chairwoman, DNC Council on the Environment and Climate Crisis:
“The Council is delighted by the nomination of Bryan Newland to help lead the Department of Interior’s work. A key contributor to the Council’s policy work, Bryan engaged with thoughtfulness and keen insight while upholding a sustainable, inclusive and inspirational vision for a U.S. that honors the protection of Tribal sovereignty, protects the environment and aggressively tackles the climate crisis. Bryan is supremely qualified for this position and adds to a stellar team at the Department of Interior and throughout the Administration. We urge the Senate to take swift action to confirm him.”
Statement of Paulette Jordan, Director of Native American Engagement, DNC Council on the Environment and Climate Crisis:
“I commend the Biden-Harris Administration for acknowledging the importance of strengthening the government-to-government relationship with each indigenous sovereign nation by nominating individuals from these nations to lead the Department of Interior. This is especially meaningful considering the Department’s past and imperative during the climate change era that we are experiencing. Every single decision that we make today is going to impact generations to come. I believe it is a critical qualification for our Secretary of Interior as the primary steward of America’s public lands to understand the culture, values, and strengths of America’s First Peoples and original stewards of this land. I have faith this new class of officials will bring a new voice toward environmental justice and the great need to heal our land, our relationships, and our country. I look forward to working with both Secretary Deb Haaland and her team at the Department and I hope the Senate will move quickly to add Bryan to that team.”
Newland served as the Council’s Policy Advisory Council in 2020, playing a key role in creating the Council’s policy positions and 2020 Democratic National Platform recommendations.
