The Debate Showed the Stark Choice in this Election on Climate: A Statement from the DNC Council on the Environment & Climate Crisis

The following statement was released by Michelle Deatrick, Founder and Chair of the DNC Environment and Climate Crisis Council in response to the climate change discussion in last night’s Presidential Debate.

“Wildfires are raging up and down the West Coast. The Gulf Coast has already faced so many hurricanes that we’ve run out of names for only the second time in history. The Midwest is still recovering from historic flooding. The climate crisis is not coming, it is here. But you certainly would not know it from listening to Donald Trump last night.

Donald Trump is a climate denier, a climate disaster, and by far the worst president in modern history when it comes to the environment. In the debate, he doubled down on leaving the Paris Climate Agreement in just a few short months. And he claimed to want ‘crystal clear water and air’— yet his administration is ensuring precisely the opposite, reversing 100 environmental rules, 27 of them directly related to air pollution and 11 related to water pollution.

Joe Biden once again showed that he will make tackling the climate crisis a priority once he is elected. Joe Biden’s commitment to ambitious, comprehensive policies and his dedication to tackling this crisis were on full display at the debate, and the choice between the candidates on climate could not be starker.”
